ITR Filing 2025 Last Date Sept 15 – Process, Penalty, Refund Rules, Extension News & Who Must File

ITR Filing 2025 deadline for AY 2025‑26 is Sept 15. No new extension announced. Learn step‑by‑step filing process, penalties, refund rules, and tips to avoid last‑minute issues

Ok so… if you still didn’t file your Income Tax Return for AY 2025‑26, you got like one day left. Sept 15, 2025 is the final date for most normal taxpayers (no audit cases). And nope – CBDT not giving any more extension this time, even though many people asking for it. The only extension we got was back in May, when they moved it from July 31 to now.

ITR Filing 2025

Who this deadline for

This Sept 15 date is for:

  • Individuals (salaried, freelancers, etc.)
  • HUFs (Hindu Undivided Families)
  • Small biz & entities using ITR‑1, ITR‑2, ITR‑3, ITR‑4

If you under tax audit, your due date is Oct 31. If you got transfer pricing report to file, then Nov 30 is your date.

How to file ITR – quick steps

  1. Go to incometax.gov.in
  2. Login with PAN (user ID) + password
  3. Select AY 2025‑26
  4. Pick your filing status (individual, HUF, etc.)
  5. Choose correct ITR form
  6. Check pre‑filled data – salary, interest, capital gains, deductions
  7. Pay any pending tax
  8. Submit return
  9. E‑verify within 30 days – else return invalid

Penalty if you miss deadline

  • Income above ₹5 lakh – ₹5,000 penalty (Sec 234F)
  • Income below ₹5 lakh – ₹1,000 penalty
  • Interest 1% per month (or part) on unpaid tax (Sec 234A)

You can still file belated return till Dec 31, 2025, but you lose some benefits like carry forward losses or switching tax regime. Updated return (ITR‑U) possible till Mar 31, 2030, but with extra cost.

Refund rules & common mistakes

Last year, 5.34 crore returns processed fine, but 2 crore taxpayers got notices – wrong bank details, mismatched income, missing deductions. Refund only comes if return is processed AND e‑verified on time. Miss the 30‑day e‑verify window and your return is treated as not filed. That means no refund, no processing, maybe even extra penalty.

Current filing numbers

As of Sept 14, over 6 crore ITRs filed – still less than last year’s 7.28 crore. Tax dept expecting 8 crore+ by deadline. That means millions will rush in last hours – portal might be slow or crash. Don’t wait till last minute.

Tips to avoid last‑minute mess

  • File during off‑peak hours (late night or early morning)
  • Keep Form 16, interest certs, capital gains statements ready
  • Check bank account details for refund credit
  • Use 24×7 helpdesk if stuck – phone, chat, WebEx, social media

Final word

No more hoping for extension – CBDT already said no. File now, e‑verify, keep acknowledgement safe. Missing deadline means paying more, losing benefits, and waiting longer for refunds. Don’t be that person filing at 11:59 PM and crying when portal hangs.
